Eglise Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc
The history...
Église Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc is a modern church built to honor Saint Joan of Arc, one of France’s most famous heroines.
Joan of Arc was a young peasant girl born in 1412 in Domrémy, France. She believed she received visions from saints, who told her to help France win its fight against England during the Hundred Years' War.
At just 17 years old, Joan led French troops to victory at the Siege of Orléans in 1429, helping to turn the war in France’s favor. However, she was captured by enemies in 1430, accused of heresy, and burned at the stake in Rouen’s Place du Vieux-Marché (Old Market Square) in 1431.
The Église Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc now stands in this square, where Joan was executed. The church was built in 1979. Its modern design is shaped like a flame to symbolize Joan’s martyrdom. The architect, Louis Arretche, also designed it to look like a ship, representing the church as a place of safety.
Inside the church, there are stunning stained-glass windows that date back to the 1500s. These windows were saved from the Church of Saint Vincent during World War II and show beautiful Bible stories. The church is both a place of worship and a tribute to Joan of Arc’s bravery, faith, and her role in French history.
